Understanding the LSAT

Before we explore guidelines and dates, let's first understand the LSAT's purpose.

As the exclusive standardized test for law school admission, the LSAT assesses critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and logical skills. It also helps you determine if law school aligns with your goals and if it’s the path you want to take.

The test consists of three scored sections (Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Analytical Reasoning), and one unscored section (Variable). The unscored section is used to evaluate questions for future tests and ensure they are free from any form of bias.

Lasting approximately three hours, the LSAT demands prompt, yet accurate, decision-making. Therefore, having a clear strategy is a crucial backbone of your preparation, emphasizing understanding the content and effective time management.

It’s well-known how highly competitive law school admissions are, which is why you should invest time in understanding the LSAT and preparing for the exam, especially if your goal is to secure a spot in a top-tier institution.

Please note, starting with the August 2024 LSAT administration, there will be changes to the scored sections. To learn more on these specific changes, check out our blog post all about the new format for 2024.

Key Dates for the 2024 LSAT

It is important to know and keep track of critical dates influencing your law school application timeline, as it will dictate your study and overall preparation schedule.

Registration Deadline

We highly advise you not to wait until the last minute to register. Registering early is paramount for ensuring that you have the flexibility to choose the most convenient testing center and dates.

For the June 2024 LSAT, the registration deadline is April 23, with testing set to commence on June 6. Ensure you register as soon as possible. It is not just for your convenience, but to increase the likelihood of a stress-free and comfortable testing environment.

Test Dates

The testing window is set for June 6th, 7th, and 8th, which offers you the flexibility to pick the day that suits you best.

LSAT Writing opens on May 29th, but get ready to lock in your slot on May 14th, as that’s when scheduling opens. For those already registered, LSAT will drop you an email when scheduling becomes available.

Score release dates

For June test-takers, the scores will be released on June 26th, so make sure to mark your calendars. The LSAT score release date plays a pivotal role in shaping your application timeline, influencing when you can submit your law school applications.

As you have noticed, your scores will be available to you a few weeks after the exam, which allows you to make an informed decision about where to apply and ensures you stay on track with the competitive law school admissions process.

LSAT Registration Tips: A Step-by-Step Guide

Your law school journey begins with a crucial step: LSAT registration.
We created this step-by-step guide to ensure you have a seamless and stress-free process.

  1. Create an LSAC Account

Begin by creating an account on the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) website. Provide accurate information to avoid complications down the line.

  2. Complete the Registration Form

Fill out the LSAT registration form, carefully entering your details. Double-check for accuracy, ensuring your information aligns with official documents.

  3. Choose Your Test Date

Select a test date that aligns with your preparation timeline. Consider personal commitments and law school application deadlines, aiming for a date that provides sufficient preparation time.

  4. Select a Testing Center

Pick a testing center convenient for you. Check the available locations and choose one that minimizes travel-related stress on test day.

  5. Submit Your Photo

Upload a recent, passport-style photo meeting LSAC requirements.

  6. Accommodations Request (if needed):

If you require special accommodations, submit your request along with supporting documentation before the registration deadline.

  7. Review and Confirm

Carefully review your registration details before confirming. Take note of your LSAC account credentials for future reference.

  8. Pay the Registration Fee

Complete the registration process by paying the required basic fee of $222. Be aware of fee waiver options if applicable.

After the registration process is complete, the next step is to elect the optimal LSAT test date. It involves a delicate balance between personal commitments and law school application timelines. Consider the following tips:

  1. Plan Ahead

Start early and plan your LSAT journey well in advance. Mapping out your study schedule and potential test dates ensures a proactive approach. Remember, Ivy Grad Services can help you with that.

  2. Align with Application Deadlines

Research law school application deadlines and work backward. Aim to complete the LSAT with sufficient time for score release, application preparation, and submission.

  3. Consider Personal Commitments

Evaluate your schedule, considering family events, work commitments, or any potential distractions. Choose a date that allows dedicated preparation.

  4. Weather and Travel Considerations

Be mindful of weather conditions, especially if you’re based in areas prone to weather changes. Factor in travel time and potential challenges on the chosen test date.

  5. Mock Exams for Timing Assessment

LawHub offers free access to four full Official LSAT PrepTests, while with Khan Academy, you have 12 full simulated practice tests. Take advantage of these free resources and conduct mock LSAT exams under timed conditions to assess your comfort level. This practice helps determine the most suitable test date based on your readiness.

Choosing the right LSAT test date requires thoughtful consideration. By following these registration tips and aligning your test date with personal and academic timelines, you set yourself up for a confident and successful LSAT experience.

Last-Minute Preparation Tips

As the LSAT exam approaches, the final weeks become a critical phase for refining your preparation. It is the time to utilize targeted test-taking strategies to enhance your approach to different question types. Additionally, concentrate on improving your weaker areas by dedicating focused study sessions to address specific challenges.

However, don’t neglect your mental and physical well-being during this period. Prioritizing LSAT preparation doesn’t mean staying up late at night and eating fast food. Sufficient sleep, a balanced nutritious diet, and stress management techniques are crucial to supporting cognitive function, mental alertness, and sustaining energy levels during such demanding tests as LSAT.

These last-minute tips, emphasizing both academic and holistic preparation, will contribute to your confidence and preparedness for success on the test.

Day Before and Day of the Test

Meticulous preparation extends beyond the content – it involves adhering to a well-thought-out checklist. Remember, the day before the LSAT is about preparing yourself physically and mentally. Trust in the preparation you’ve done and take steps to ensure a smooth and stress-free test day experience.

Here are several things to keep in mind:

  1. Ensure you have your valid ID.

  2. Make sure to memorize your LawHub username/password. (These are the same credentials you used to register for the LSAT.)

  3. Confirm the route and transportation to the test center. Consider a trial run to estimate travel time if you’re not familiar with the location.

  4. Avoid heavy or unfamiliar foods. Pack a light nourishing snack and water.

  5. Plan your outfit to be comfortable and in layers to adapt to varying room temperatures.

  6. Dedicate at least half of the day to relaxing to enhance focus and cognitive function on the test day.

Leave behind any unnecessary stress on the day of the LSAT test and:

  1. Do NOT bring electronic devices, study materials, or bulky bags. There will be lockers where you will be able to leave those, however, avoid bringing unnecessary items.

  2. We recommend you arrive at least 60 min before the scheduled start time to account for check-in procedures and familiarize yourself with the test center.

  3. Be prepared for security measures, including identity verification and a brief security screening.

  4. Testing centers usually assign specific seats, so follow instructions to find your designated spot.

  5. Understand the break policy, and what you can and can’t do during the break.

Bonus tips from Ivy Grad Services:

  • Incorporate deep breathing exercises during the intermission to stay calm and focused.

  • Remind yourself of your capabilities with positive affirmations.

  • Concentrate on one question at a time, avoiding unnecessary stress about the entire test.

  • Be mindful of the time, pace yourself effectively, allocating time wisely to each section.

  • Regardless of the outcome, maintain a positive mindset and consider the experience a valuable step in your law school journey.

After the Test: Understanding Your Score

As mentioned earlier, you can generally expect to receive your LSAT scores within a few weeks.

Take into consideration that your LSAT score will be released only upon having an approved LSAT Writing sample on record, and if there are no holds on your account. If you're a first-time test taker, LSAT Writing must be completed before your score can be released and it can be completed as early as eight days before the test.

Once you get your results, you have an option of Score Preview, which allows you to see your LSAT score before deciding whether to keep it and have it reported to law schools.

For LSAT June 2024 admission, the Score Preview open date is May 14, and the closing date is May 28; the cost is $45 if you purchase it before the first day of testing, or $75 if you purchase Score Preview during a specified period after the test administration.

At this point, you might be deciding whether to cancel your score or keep it. Before you make this decision, we want you to consider several things.

  • You can take LSAT only seven times over a lifetime.

  • The admission committee of a law school receives a copy of all your reportable LSAT scores. It then depends on each school’s approach to the admission process, some consider the highest score, and some consider the average score as the best predictor of your abilities.

  • Your score might not improve if you retake the LSAT. It might stay the same, or even decrease.

  • Cancellation policy varies depending on if you’ve purchased the Score Preview.

  • There is no refund, if you decide to cancel your score.

Nevertheless, this is a pivotal choice that might be challenging to make without a professional opinion, and Ivy Grad Services recognizes the importance of guidance during this period.

Our team of experts can provide insights into the implications of score cancellation and help you make informed decisions aligned with your aspirations.

Beyond this, Ivy Grad Services stands ready to assist you in the next phases of your legal education journey, offering support for potential retakes, refining strategies for improvement, and navigating the intricate process of applying to law schools.
