MEET KATHERINE
Originally from San Jose, Costa Rica, Katherine graduated from Columbia University in May of 2014 and from Howard University School of Law in May of 2020 on a Merit Scholarship. She was also a King and Spalding 1L Scholar and one of twenty students to be selected across the nation to receive the American Bar Association’s Legal Opportunity Scholarship.
She was a member of the 2015 Teach for America cohort in Miami, Florida where she taught mathematics to high school juniors and seniors. During this time, she also coached the girls’ soccer team and facilitated the chess club.
Katherine spent her undergraduate summers interning at various institutions, including the Attorney General’s Office of Rhode Island, the Legal Department of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, and the Rhode Island General Treasurer’s Office. She also served as a high school mentor and tutor through the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, instructed a classroom of ninth-grade students in algebra through Columbia’s Double Discovery Center, taught English as a Second Language to local community members, and co-chaired the Black Student Group Consortium—receiving the King’s Crown Leadership Excellence Award for Community Building.
Prior to law school, Katherine worked for Shearman & Sterling LLP as a paralegal mainly in the International Arbitration group. During her first summer of law school, she worked in-house for Marriott International and was exposed to the exciting world of data privacy law, which ultimately influenced her decision to seek out the Data Privacy group as a summer associate at White & Case LLP. Having decided that she wanted to work in data privacy, Katherine externed with the Federal Trade Commission her last year of law school to gain insight into the regulatory world of data privacy.
Katherine was an active student at Howard and made many contributions to the legal writing department. In her second year of law school, Katherine joined the law school’s main publication, the Howard Law Journal, as a staff editor. During her third year she served as a Senior Articles Editor; managing a group of six second-year students. Having received the highest grade in both legal writing I and legal writing II, Katherine was also chosen by the faculty as one of six Dean’s Fellows that taught a legal citations course to 25 first-year students. Katherine also worked in Howard Law’s career services department helping students improve their resumes and personal statements.
In her free time, Katherine enjoys working out, completing home improvement projects, sketching, watching anime, spending time with friends and family, cooking, and rooting for the Boston Celtics.
Katherine passed the February 2021 New York Bar Exam and is currently an Associate at White & Case in the Data Privacy and Cybersecurity group.
