MEET KHARA
Originally from Jackson, New Jersey, Khara graduated from Columbia Law School in the spring of 2021 and was named a James Kent Scholar.
Khara graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in American Studies and African-American & African Studies from the College of Arts and Sciences in May 2015. Before law school, Khara worked in the Managing Attorney’s Office at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP. A year after leaving the firm, she returned as a 1L LCLD Diversity Scholar. Having decided that she wanted to work in litigation, Khara focused on experiences at Columbia Law that would best help her fine tune her research, writing and advocacy skills.
Khara was an active member of the Columbia Law School community. During her 2L year, she joined the Columbia Human Rights Law Review as a staff editor, where she focused primarily on work with the publication’s Jailhouse Lawyer’s Manual. As a result of her strong performance in Legal Practice Workshop I and II, Khara was selected as a Foundation Moot Court Program Student Editor, where she worked with first year students during the portion of their legal writing seminar focused on appellate brief writing and advocacy. Khara also worked with students as a Legal Writing Teaching Fellow during her 3L year. Khara was also a member of the Adolescent Representation Clinic, served as a Peer Mentor to incoming students, worked with Student Services as an Admissions Student Ambassador and was the Co-Chair of the Black Law Students Association’s 26th Annual Paul Robeson Gala.
Having been the beneficiary of support and guidance from friends and strangers during her law school journey, Khara has dedicated her time to helping prospective law students work on their application materials. In her free time, Khara enjoys traveling, Peloton cycling and spending time with her friends and family over food.
Khara passed the July 2021 New York Bar exam and is currently in her second year working in the Litigation department of a New York law firm.
KHARA'S TESTIMONIALS
“Working with Khara as a first-generation college student from New Jersey, like Khara, was a pleasure! Not only was she extremely professional and kind when giving me feedback on my Personal Statement and Diversity Statement, she related to my experience and fears as a Black woman applying for law school. She provided me with excellent edits / revisions in a short timespan for both essays. When I struggled with picking a topic for my Diversity Statement, Khara scheduled a call with me to review my answers to the helpful Writing Prompt she provided me with. I felt extremely confident in both of my essays after Khara’s thorough revisions and suggestions.”

“Khara John was a rewardable advocate, guide, and mentor in my law school application journey. As a re-applicant, Black woman, and aspiring first-generation law student, it was imperative to have someone who understood how to effectively navigate applying to law school to yield financial, academic, and professional favorability. From the moment I decided to commit to Ivy Grad Services and was assigned to Ms. John, I knew I had made a suitable investment. Ivy Grad Services provided me with a comprehensive LSAT Prep course that allowed me to increase my LSAT score by 6 points, and I was in contact with Ms. John at times twice a week to work on endlessly perfecting my statements, resume, addenda, law school list, and other components. The passion, authenticity, valuable perspective, wisdom, and experience Ms. John possesses made her a delight to work with and provided me with much comfort and confidence as I embarked on and completed a significant accomplishment of applying to law school. With Ms. John’s assistance, I successfully earned eight acceptances and four waitlist offers. After consulting with her and deliberation with myself, I am happy to announce I will attend Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University with a substantial scholarship, joining the Class of 2027. I couldn’t have done it without the diligence, care, and support of Ivy Grad Services and Khara John.”
